issue 6. A mom’s legacy
I got a ticket for a fashion show (absolutely incredible, what can I tell you?). I think after 2 weeks of webinars, talks, studying shows from home, I deserved a treat. I made friends with the girl next to me in the queue, Pilar, and we decided to sit together. We both went alone, isn’t it great that when you follow your passions you find similar people on the way?
There ended up being 3 of us because we also made friends with a girl because she was alone on one of the balconies, Josy. There was a photographer that took a picture of us three, I have to find him! We had a little chat in Italian, too.
Yolancris fashion show was very much my style. Flowy dresses, some with shine, some with bright colours. There comes a time in many girls’ lives when we make peace with wearing a dress, wearing romantic colours, with heels, with taking up space through the volume in our clothes, ... It has nothing to do with clothes and it means absolutely everything.
My camera and I begin to understand each other more. I still have to learn a lot but I take it everywhere! A camera and a magazine are the same level of old obsessions.
Fashion shows as an outsider with a ticket feel illegal sometimes. But the beauty is so immense I just can’t stop finding them super interesting. This time last year I was dreaming of this magazine and knowing that I had to begin documenting this very active search for beauty. And my favorite part is not even the fashion show itself. I would die to be backstage, managing all the stress, making last minute decisions, touching the fabrics, studying beauty looks, appreciating the atelier’s huge talent up close.
My sewing classes won’t make me a master in 2 days, but by this time next year I will have some pieces finished and that search for beauty will continue in my own closet, and that means it all.
Yolanda and Cristina’s mom used to dress brides. You can see it in their designs and in the way they celebrate a woman’s fugure.
I have a personal admiration for brands that are born out of a mother’s love. Like Jacquemus. Like Yolancris.
When you look at these pieces or when you wear them, you are not only wearing a beautiful dress. You wear tradition, a household, a family, many days working non-stop, someone’s decision to nurture their creativity, a personal victory, an admiration for artisans... and if you are lucky, you can wear the biggest thing in the world, a mom’s love.
(One day I will be a mom and my kids will continue my legacy hehehehe)
